This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil, we analyze the worrying rise in the illegal practice of child labor in the country amid the global coronaviurs pandemic. A reflection of the government’s neo-liberal agenda, that is constantly diminishing regulations and oversight, the problem is reaching levels not seen in decades.

Alongside an increase in child labor, the neo-liberal agenda of Finance Minister Paulo Guedes is steam rolling ahead with plans to privatize the country’s post office system. Under the false pretext of a State monopoly, the government seeks to allow private enterprises, who already participate in the mail delivery market, to acquire a larger share of the sector, if not the entire postal service.

This past week, Brazil’s most iconic monument turned 89. The Christ the Redeemer statue overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro with its arms stretching out over the Bay of Guanabara. Voted in as one of the seven wonders of the modern world in 2007, the monument now stands as the youngest world wonder.
